Maison Saint-Gabriel: a visual identity rooted in heritage and looking to the future

A visual identity that evolves with the Maison

The Maison Saint-Gabriel is a living space that has transformed over time. Our visual identity is also evolving to better reflect today’s reality whilst remaining true to its history.

For over 350 years, Maison Saint-Gabriel has borne witness to the history of Montréal and the work of Marguerite Bourgeoys. It carries on this legacy by highlighting the vital role of women in the development of Ville-Marie, as well as the richness of daily life in New France.

A symbol inspired by the site

At the heart of this identity lies a stylised representation of Maison Saint-Gabriel. A symbol of roots, memory, and hospitality, it evokes heritage, the passing on of knowledge and the experience of the site itself.

The lines incorporated into the façade recall the furrows of the earth; the gardens and the skills associated with agriculture. They also reflect the passing on of knowledge and the continuity of the actions that have shaped the site over the generations.

The simplified silhouette captures the house’s most distinctive architectural features, including its steeply pitched roof and iconic gables. Clean, recognizable, and timeless, it creates a strong visual identity that reflects the character of the site.

A colour palette rooted in the materials and the landscape

Blue grey evokes stone, stability, and memory. Beige recalls light and natural materials. The wood-tone refers to the timber framework and the human craftsmanship embedded in the building, whilst green highlights the presence of the gardens and cultivated land.

Together, these colours create a warm, balanced visual world that is deeply rooted in the history of the place.

A bridge between heritage and the present

Conceived as a natural evolution rather than a break with the past, this visual identity reflects a desire to preserve the spirit of the Maison Saint-Gabriel whilst adopting a contemporary, understated, and sustainable aesthetic. It supports the museum in its development and bears witness to the bond between the Maison Saint-Gabriel and the Marguerite-Bourgeoys Historic Site.
